Tips for looking after Oriental rugs

Oriental rugs are elegant and beautiful and can transform any place to make them look classy and charming overnight.

These rugs can be beautiful with their unique designs, textures and colors but they are extremely expensive too. Most oriental rugs take months to make and are generally all hand made which makes them so exquisite and so expensive as well.

It isn’t possible for everyone to purchase these rugs often so it is important that if you have one of them you should also know about how to take care of them so that they stay as good as new for as long as possible.

These rugs are quite different than the normal carpets and rugs, and taking care of them would require a few different measures too. Given below are a few basic ways in which you can take care of your rugs:

* If you have placed your rug anywhere near the window it is important to protect it from direct sun rays. Strong sunlight can be extremely damaging to the rug and they might fade away quickly.

The best thing to do is to keep window coverings so that direct sunlight does not affect the rug. Another thing you can do is to keep rotating the rug after every few days so that a single part of the rug does not get discolored.

* Another thing that you could do is get padding for the rug. Padding can be helpful in quite a lot of different ways. First of all, it would prevent the rug from getting damaged due to excessive footfall if your rug is placed in the living room. And another reason is that it would help keep the rug in place.

* It is important to keep the rug clean and free of dust and dirt. Sweeping regularly can help doing this, you could also vacuum it but sweeping is better. Do not really wash the rug unless it is very necessary, and if required you can wash it at home without using any strong detergents.

* Keep the rug free from moisture and humidity since this can cause the rug fibers to rot eventually. You could do this by airing the rug out and hanging it outside for a few hours to get rid of the humidity. Also, you can use a rug beater to get the dirt and the dust out from inside the rug.

* Keep moths away since they can cause extensive damage. If you air and rotate the rug regularly then moths would not be a problem, otherwise you could also use a moth spray.

* Keep an eye on the rug to take notice of any damages or repair work which might be required. If you do not get the damages repaired soon they might keep expanding.
Oriental rugs are extremely precious and for a good reason and which is why they require a little extra care. If you follow these tips, your rugs could remain as good as new for years.
